Please Note: This FAQ is a work in progress and will be updated over time with more information to assist veterans and newcomers alike.

Can I change my Race ID?

Race ID requests are available only during Early Bird. You must enter the requested Race ID in your entry form. These are first come first serve. We will however reserve your number until next year should you enter during Early Bird again and wish to use the same number again.

If you do not nominate for a Race ID they will be assigned sequentially according to order of entry.

 

What if I feel I cannot complete both days of the race?

There is a One Day entry available at a reduced rate which means you complete only Day 1 of the race from Northam to Cobbler Pool, West Toodyay.

Please note that there are no prizes awarded for One Day competitors.

What if I can’t make it to Registration in Northam?

At least one competitor per entry must attend Registration on the Friday before the event in order for you to be able to start the race on Saturday morning. They must bring with them the helmets of all their team mates in order for timing chips and helmet stickers to be attached.

 

How do I find out my Starting Grid position?    

Start Grids for Day 1 will be on display at Registrations in Northam. They will also be available at the Start Marshalling area, as well as on the Avon Descent website in the days before the race.

Start Grids for Day 2 will be posted at the end of Day 1 on the Avon Descent website and will also be available from the Start Marshalls on the morning of Day 2.

 

Some of my stickers have fallen off or need replacing. What do I do?

Spare sponsor stickers will be available at Registrations.

If your Race ID stickersneed to be replaced, you may need to be assigned a new Race ID number. We cannot do requests for replacement Race ID numbers.

 

How do I get my Helmet Race ID Number and Timing Chip?

You  will be supplied with a helmet Race ID Number Sticker and Timing Chip at Registration in Northam where there will be a machine to test that your timing chips are working correctly.

If you have a carbon fibre helmet please notify Officials so you can be supplied with a foam spacer to place between the helmet and the Timing Chip.

 

What Sponsor Stickers do I need to place on my craft?

Remember: Apply stickers on a clean dry surface 12 hours prior to getting wet to ensure they stick properly.

Sponsor stickers will be provided in your race packs available at Scrutineering along with instructions on how to attach them to your craft.

 

Where is Registration?

Northam Swimming Pool

Open from 12.00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m on Friday 4th August.

(Northam is approximately one hour from Midland in light traffic. )

Follow the signs into Northam and to Registrations.

 

Where does my entry fee go?

Your entry fee goes toward the smooth running of the event:

  • Fencing
  • Signage
  • Toilets
  • Traffic Management
  • Medical and emergency services
  • Waste management
  • Registration
  • Race packs
  • Timing and Results
  • General Infrastructure

 

What are the details for paddler Competency Testing?

If you haven’t competed in both days of the Avon Descent in the past 5 years you will need to complete a competency test. This can be done through authorised paddle suppliers and must be completed prior to Registrations on Friday 4th August. Please click here to find out more about competency assessment. A competency test is valid for 3 years from the date of the test.

What happens if I do not qualify for safety competency and I am unable to complete a test?

Unfortunately you will not be able to begin the race.

Where do I find information on prizes and prize money?

The prize pool for this year’s event is yet to be announced.

How do I make changes to my entry details ?

Changes can be made by logging in to your Entry using the details emailed to you when you entered. Any additional changes can be made by emailing info@avondescent.com.au

Late changes will be permitted at Registrationbut are subject to a $50 administration fee

Can someone else register for me in Northam ?

Yes. They must be able to display confirmation of your Entry (email print out will suffice). They must have your PFD and race helmet scrutineered. Please note if this is not done correctly, you will be ineligible to start the race.

What do I need to know about Paddle Craft Scrutineering?

Scrutineering will be held at 9 am in Bayswater on 23rd of July. Scrutineering is compulsory for all entries. Those who do not attend Pre-Race Scrutineering in Bayswater must be scrutineered at Registrations in Northam on the Friday before the event. For those who do not have a valid exemption for Scrutineering in Bayswater (subject to exemptions listed in the Event Rules) will be subject to a $100 administrative fee.

How do I enter as a power boat competitor?

All power boat memberships are handled by the Power Dinghy Racing Club. Only those with a current membership with the PDRC are able to race in the Avon Descent.

Firstly you must join a club – they are a friendly bunch and are especially keen to welcome new Avon Descenters. They will help you source and select a boat and motor, and guide you through the qualifying process required to enter the Avon Descent. You can read all the info here.
